Director, Exploitation & Business Development

We are looking for a senior leader with the combination of people, business and technical acumen to lead exploitation, business development, A&D and reserves. Reporting to the President & CEO, this integral leadership position will work with their team to partner with internal stakeholders and lead projects in all areas of the business (conventional, unconventional and thermal), execute A&D projects, identify business opportunities, and manage the company’s reserves. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of liaising with and presenting to the Board of Directors, strategic leadership success, technical guidance, developing and mentoring direct reports, and will have the ability to drive change and add value across the organization.

Key accountabilities include:


  • Providing leadership for optimal performance by managing and developing direct reports, capable of producing agreed-upon deliverables
  • Creating an environment for employee development, team building and mentorship
  • Developing strong relationships between internal and external stakeholders


  • Developing production, recoverable reserve and economic forecasts for internal budgets, acquisitions and development opportunities
  • Working with internal stakeholders to ensure corporate compliance with regulatory bodies in areas relating to drilling, reservoir depletion, and recovery schemes
  • Bringing forward and maintaining a focus on operational excellence
  • Performing other duties and special projects as assigned by the President & CEO
  • Engaging as a hands-on leader to identify, evaluate, prioritize, plan and execute exploitation, workover, and acquisition opportunities
  • Managing reserves evaluations
  • Providing mentorship at a technical business and leadership level for the technical professionals in the Exploitation group

Business Development

  • Working in a multidisciplinary environment to identify, evaluate, prioritize, plan and execute business development (BD) opportunities
  • Strategically optimizing value throughout the organization through identification of business development opportunities
  • Providing analyses and recommendations of new business development initiatives, including proven oil and natural gas reserves, pipelines, gas plants, and other quality cash flow-producing assets
  • Monitoring and evaluating reservoir performance to optimize production and recovery
  • Formulating growth opportunities via new depletion techniques and acquisition opportunities
  • Developing and presenting well-vetted and supported recommendations and business strategies
  • Financial modeling of Pengrowth’s base business and incremental business opportunities (M&A, large projects, optimization)


  • A Senior Exploitation Engineer with 20+ years’ experience in roles of increasing scope and responsibility
  • Strong and proven business development experience
  • Extensive experience and knowledge with conventional and unconventional operations
  • A proven track record of successful A&D transactions
  • Solid project management and negotiation skills
  • Strong leadership skills including performance management, mentoring and coaching of technical professionals
  • A consummate team player with a naturally collaborative and interactive style
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Previous experience in Thermal operations would be considered an asset
